Low-cost demand response for hospitality

Turn hotel fridges & ice makers into a flexible energy asset.

FlexFridge uses smart plugs and temperature-aware control to gently shift when in-room refrigerators and ice machines run – cutting electricity costs and supporting the grid without guests ever noticing.

Designed for hotel & VPP partnerships

Who it’s for: hotel owners & operators, utilities, and VPPs looking for new sources of flexible load.

How FlexFridge works

FlexFridge is a simple layer on top of the equipment you already own. We connect hotel mini-fridges and ice makers to the cloud using smart plugs and then coordinate their run cycles based on grid conditions, time-of-use rates, or demand-response events.

For hotel owners & operators

  • Plug existing fridges and ice machines into FlexFridge-enabled smart plugs.
  • We learn each device’s normal cycling and safe temperature range.
  • During expensive or high-stress grid periods, we slightly shift compressor start times.
  • Guests still get cold drinks and full ice bins; you get lower bills and new incentive revenue.

For utilities & VPPs

  • Unlock a new, thermally buffered load class: hotel fridges & ice machines.
  • Issue event or price signals via API to thousands of small devices.
  • Aggregate & verify performance with per-device submetered data.
  • Support grid stability without asking guests to change behavior.

Why fridges and ice makers?

In-room fridges and hallway ice machines are always on but rarely optimized. They have built-in “thermal storage” – meaning we can pre-cool when power is cheap or clean and coast during peaks without affecting the guest experience.

Mini-fridges

  • Nearly every mid-size room has one, but few are monitored.
  • Loads are small individually but significant in aggregate.
  • Short, frequent compressor cycles are ideal for small shifts.
  • Perfect match for hotel corporate sustainability initiatives.

Ice makers

  • Higher-power compressors with large thermal mass in the ice bin.
  • Can pre-freeze ahead of known peaks (e.g., late afternoon).
  • Short pauses during DR events barely move bin temperature.
  • Creates measurable, chunky load reductions without guest impact.
